La Stella
This trip was hosted by Visit Dallas.
One of the best, most extravagant, and most thoughtful meals I have ever had. Full stop.
I have to tell this story right. We did not know what we were walking into. Visit Dallas sent us to La Stella for dinner the night of my Dallas show and the three of us had not looked the restaurant up ahead of time. We had no idea what we were getting into. We were already running behind because the drive into Dallas had taken longer than we expected. We had about fifty minutes before we had to leave for the venue. We sat down. We did not order. The chef sent out a selection of things from the kitchen. That is where the story starts. Mary Ryan and Andrew and I are talkers. We do not sit at a dinner table and stay quiet. But slowly, plate by plate, we got more and more quiet. We realized what we were experiencing as we were experiencing it. It was extravagant. It was thoughtful. It was artistic and designed and it kept coming. This was a Wednesday in April before a comedy show and it ended up being one of the best meals of my life. It was a "wow, is this really my life" kind of dinner. I kept thinking about it during the show. I am still thinking about it now. This is the first restaurant I have featured as its own travel guide and it belongs here. If you are in Dallas for anything, build a night around La Stella.
Cucina Verace
La Stella Cucina Verace sits in the Dallas Arts District at 2330 Flora Street. The name is Italian for "True Cuisine," and every dish on the menu earns it. The chef knows what he is doing. Every plate has a reason for being there. The room is generous without being stiff. Leather booths and warm light. The service is the part I keep coming back to. The team reads the table before the table has figured itself out. They know when to pour, when to pause, when to tell you about the dish in front of you, and when to let you eat.
Why this one stuck
Nothing on the table felt accidental. Every plate looked like it belonged in a cookbook. I am already planning the next trip to Dallas just to send everyone I love to this place.
The Shortlist
If you can swing it, let the kitchen drive. That is how we ate and it was the best possible version of the experience. Call ahead. Tell them you are coming. Ask them to put together a tasting. Trust the chef. The pasta is housemade and non-negotiable either way. The wine list leans deep Italian and the sommelier will meet you wherever you are with it, from a $60 bottle to a once-in-a-lifetime pour. The chef's counter is the single best seat if you can book it. You will watch the line work and you will not believe what you are seeing.
Make a Night of It
Before or After Dinner
Open late on Thursdays. Perfect pre-dinner wander.
Small, focused, and one of the best sculpture collections in the country. 30 minutes well spent.
If the night has a show, see it. The building itself is worth the trip.
